“I'm definitely excited,” the younger Voss said. “I've been playing soccer for so long, to get to do it at the next level and to get scholarship money for it, is incredible.”
Voss led the Cougars in scoring during her senior campaign last fall and was the High Desert League's Offensive Player of the Year. She helped the Cougars earn the HDL's No. 2 postseason seed and a playoff home game last season, both program firsts.
Voss said the choice to go to Nevada was a relatively easy one.
“When they started talking to me, I liked the campus and liked the idea of staying close to home,” she said. “My sister is there as well and I have her experiences to draw from. It seemed like a good choice.”
Voss is one of the fastest student athletes in the Silver State. She has already placed three times in various events at Nevada's large-school state championship track meet.
“I had been debating between soccer and track for a long time,” Voss said. “When soccer offered me the scholarship, I knew then what I wanted to do.”
Voss played four seasons of varsity soccer for Spanish Springs. Cougars coach Mike Faker has seen his fleet-footed star mature each and every year. He believes she has a huge upside at the collegiate level.
“When she was a freshman, I thought she could be a D-1 soccer player,” Faker said. “I think she'll play next year and as a junior she''ll start and play every minute she can. She is so fast and her skill level will just improve every year.”
Voss and her family were all smiles at Wednesday's signing ceremony. It will be an easy family commute to watch Laura and Sarah compete next fall.
“It's very exciting for us,” said Anne Voss, the girls' mother. “We're pleased Laura is staying home and we get to watch. She has worked so hard and set her goals. To see her reach those is great for her.”
