RENO — A group of nonpartisan and volunteer parents, educators, administrators and concerned citizens has organized Parent Leaders for Education with a goal of advocating for the support of education as a top priority in the upcoming session of the Nevada Legislature.

Their first order of business was to establish Jan. 10-14 as Public Schools Week and to receive proclamations for the week from the cities of Reno and Sparks. Representatives from the group will attend the City Council meeting in Sparks today and the City Council meeting in Reno on Jan. 19 to receive the proclamations.

Public Schools Week will include school-based open houses and question-and-answer sessions with invited Nevada Assembly and Senate members and other invited guests. Schools hosting the open houses during Public Schools Week, generally between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., include Towles, Huffaker, Cannan, Hall, Caughlin Ranch, Mt. Rose and Hidden Valley elementary schools.

Parent Leaders for Education volunteers have spoken with and will soon speak with legislators once the state Legislature convenes. Volunteers also expect to attend various committee meetings and key sessions of the Legislature.
