RENO — Reno Youth Bridge held its first Regional Tournament on Thursday for the 2010-2011 school year at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Bridge team members from Washoe County School District’s middle schools were invited to compete for the 2010 Regional RYB Bridge Championship Trophy at the venue of the American Contract Bridge League’s Holiday Regional Tournament now in progress at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Thirty students and teachers braved the cold and dreary weather to come compete. Participating schools included the Davidson Academy, High Desert Montessori Charter School, Depoali Middle School, Sparks Middle School and Shaw Middle School. The weather made travel too difficult for middle school students from Incline Village at Lake Tahoe and O’Brien, Billinghurst and Cold Springs schools to attend

Play began at 10 a.m. and for the next three hours the competitors challenged each other to get the best score on each hand. For the first time the students were able to post the scores on each hand they played into an electronic device at each table. They entered declarer position, their contract and score for making or not making and then sent it to a server at the tournament score table.

The electric score pad made it possible for the base station to compute the final standings for the game within minutes following the last hand.

The team of Jackson Hart and Tyler Hart from the Davidson Academy were the overall champions. The overall runners up were Max Prada and Jason Stevens from Sparks Middle School.
