The department will join forces with agencies across the nation for the Click it or Ticket campaign. The department was awarded a grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety that will pay for additional officers to be on the streets looking for traffic violators who are not buckled up and for children unrestrained, or not properly restrained.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for ages 3 to 14. In 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,347 children 14 and younger were killed as a result of traffic collisions. Half of those lives lost could have been saved if the children were properly restrained at the time of the collision. The NHTSA also reports that in 2008 seat belts saved more than 13,000 lives nationwide and between 2004 and 2008 saved over 75,000 lives.
The Sparks Police Department urges all vehicle occupants to buckle up. Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.
