“It was a great game,” Sparks National coach Guy Pferschy said. “We threw as many pitchers as we could. They had a great time out there. They played a good hard game of baseball.”
The Reno squad started things off early with two hits and a run in the first inning and continued its hot hitting until the fifth inning. Reno had nine hits and seven runs in the first four innings.
Sparks on the other hand did not fair nearly as well. Sparks didn’t get its first hit until the bottom of the fourth when Adrian Garcia singled. Reno’s Jeremy Watland pulled his team out of the inning with two consecutive strikeouts.
Sparks picked up its defense in the fifth with two strikeouts followed by an out at first.
“We actually executed and played catch,” Pferschy said about his team’s defensive effort.
Sparks finally strung a few base runners together to score in the fifth inning. Anfernee Ruiz and Bryce Bryant both walked and advanced to third and second on a passed ball. Nathan Foreman hit a two-run double to collect the only RBIs for Sparks National. The key hit stopped Reno from pulling away with a shutout, 7-2.
“I was actually pretty pleased with (our offense)” Pferschy said. “We had good contact. We didn’t have a lot of strikeouts.”
Reno scored another two to put away Sparks for good, accounting for the 9-2 victory.
“They came to hit. We just didn’t hit it hard enough through the holes,” Pferschy said. “They (Reno) had good defense as well.”
The 9-10 Sparks National All-Star team is done for the season but was happy with the four games they played during the tournament.
“We really grew from the first game to this last game,” Pferschy said. “The bats started coming alive there. We were more aggressive at the plate. The kids actually had smiles out there no matter the outcome of the game.”
