Rail City schools swept the top two spots in the High Desert League's season-opening golf tournament Tuesday afternoon at Reno's Lakeridge Golf Course. Perennial league power Spanish Springs won the team title, posting a 410, while Reed finished second, turning in a team total of 428.

The Spanish Springs softball team got its season started in fine fashion Thursday, picking up a pair of wins at the Sacramento Preseason Victory Tournament on Opening Day of the spring campaign. The Cougars, a traditional northern Nevada large-school power, knocked off Del Campo of east suburban Sacramento, 4-0 and then handed Lowry, of Winnemucca, a 2-1 defeat.
