SPARKS — The Mammovan will be making its way into Sparks on Wednesday at the Safeway store located at 2858 Vista Blvd., from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

It will then be in Reno on Thursday and Friday at the Safeway Store in Reno, 5150 Mae Anne Ave., at the same times. The Mammovan will be offering mammograms to insured and uninsured women in the community.

The Mammovan, run by Nevada Health Centers, accepts most insurances and serves the uninsured. If women do not have health insurance, grant funds will pay for their mammograms.Uninsured women are asked bring in proof of income, proof of address and proof of dependants. Depending on this, eligibility for a free mammogram will be determined.

Insured and uninsured patients must be 40 years of age or older or a dependent and had no mammograms in the previous 12 months. A co-pay is due at time of visit for insured patients

Uninsured patients will need to apply for a sliding scale and will need to bring:

• Proof of income. Iif income is below 200 percent of the poverty level, the patient will be placed under a grant.

• Proof address

• Proof of dependents in household

The Mammovan is a mobile mammography van that travels to underserved areas of the state to provide mammograms to geographically isolated and/or uninsured women who probably would not seek out mammography services on their own. The Mammovan, which began operating in 2000, was made possible through a grant secured by former Sen. John Ensign and the former first lady of Nevada, Dema Guinn. Nevada’s current first lady, Kathleen Sandoval is the current spokeswoman and honorary chair for the Mammovan. The Mammovan seeks to serve the underserved population, targeting women age 40 and over. The Mammovan also provides services for women under 40 who are physician-referred or who present with a problem.
