RENO — For the majority of northern Nevada families, August means back to school and getting ready for the school year ahead. For Immunize Nevada, it means National Immunization Awareness Month and an opportunity to educate the community about the importance of immunizing to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases.

As a state that lags in preventive health care, especially immunizations for children, Immunize Nevada is bringing health and education resources to The Summit shopping center at the Stroll-n-Roll for Children. This first-time event is a one-mile walk and community fair to raise awareness and education about the importance of healthy living for children and families.

Families will enjoy hands-on activities for children, a bounce house and snacks for the children, free resources for parents and the last immunization clinic for children before the traditional school year begins in Washoe County on Aug. 29. Parents and children also can purchase last-minute back-to-school clothes and supplies at one of The Summit’s 70 stores.

In February, the Commonwealth Fund ranked Nevada No. 51 in the nation in preventive health care and, according to the National Immunization Survey, Nevada ranks No. 45 in the nation for immunizations for children 19-35 months old — an improvement from years past, but still a disturbing number. The Stroll-n-Roll for Children brings these issues to light and allows for local non-profit health and safety organizations to educate community members, young and old. This event is presented by The Summit and Immunize Nevada, and sponsored by Amerigroup Community Care.

Walk registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Stroll-n-Roll begins at 10 a.m. Exhibits, immunization clinic and activities are open from 9 a.m. to noon. The Summit is located at 13925 S. Virginia St. in Reno. Pre-registration costs $8 for participants who register on or before Aug. 24. Registration on the day of the event costs $10 and children 12 and under are free. All registered participants receive a $5 gift card to The Summit on walk day. Register online at
