A new week did not equal a new-look Sparks boys basketball squad when the Railroaders took the floor at Wooster Tuesday night.

The Colts made their first four shots of the second quarter — all from behind the arc — and turned a somewhat close game into a not so close game as the hosts cruised to a 70-50 win.

Sparks coach Dick Lee was looking forward to Monday’s practice after suffering three lopsided defeats at the Wild West Shootout last week, but he said Monday’s practice was average and Tuesday’s game was terrible.

“The way we played tonight, you’d think we had a bad practice yesterday,” he said.

Both teams entered the game on losing streaks. Wooster, which hadn’t scored 40 points in its losses, tallied the first five points of Tuesday’s contest and never trailed.

Sparks (2-4) got all of its offense in the first quarter on a trio of 3-pointers — two by Martin Jordan and one by Henry Houston. Houston had a team-high 17 points in the game.

But there was no stopping the Colts’ offense. Man defense didn’t work. Zone defense didn’t work. And Sparks could not keep Wooster senior forward Anthony Wright off the glass, who poured in 16 points in limited action.

“You can’t take anything away from Wooster. They played well,” Lee said. “The first half we tried to play man, but we couldn’t guard them. They were better than us. We don’t practice zone, but we thought we’d give it a try.”

Wooster opened the second period with a 20-9 lead only to extend the gap to 20 points, 32-12, on four treys in the first 1:37 of the quarter. A Houston 3-pointer was the only thing preventing a string of 12 unanswered points.

The Maroon and Gold finally showed life in the closing minutes of the half when all-league guard Angel Guillen took it upon himself to run the offense. Guillen scored seven straight points before Wooster knocked down its sixth 3-pointer of the half with 6 seconds left on the clock.

Guillen came right back and made an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer, cutting the deficit to 39-26 at the break.

It was all downhill for the Railroaders after halftime. The SHS hoopsters went silent for nearly four minutes. In that time, the Colts pushed the lead to 46-26.

Guillen stopped the 7-0 run with his final two points of the game. He had 12 in the losing cause.

Wooster held Sparks to only nine points in the third, while scoring 20 of its own.

The 4A school got the advantage up to a game-high 29 points, 64-35, with 5:49 to play in the game. Houston scored seven points down the stretch for the Railroaders, including his third 3-pointer, which led to the final 20-point margin of victory.

Cody Griffith quietly paced the Colts’ offense with 17 points, while teammate Colton Sims chipped in with 10 in the winning cause.

Jordan had 11 points for Sparks.

The Railroaders are back in action tonight against Incline, which is now in the 2A. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Brickhouse.
