RENO — The United States Marshals Service (USMS) announced Wednesday the arrest of Steven M. James (a.k.a. Steven Mell), a fugitive wanted in Spokane, Wash. on an outstanding probation warrant issued in 1983.

James, 59, was sentenced to probation as the result of a 1983 conviction for attempted indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14.

The investigation to locate James led deputy U.S. Marshals to the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was found to be a full-time student. James was arrested on campus Tuesday afternoon as he arrived for class. He was booked into the Washoe County jail and is awaiting extradition to Washington.

“This arrest showcases how cooperation between federal and local law enforcement is paramount in locating fugitives fleeing from justice, in this case, for nearly 28 years,” said Christopher Hoye, the U.S. Marshal for the District of Nevada.
