RENO — It’s an issue that nearly 49 million people in the United States have to face on a year-round basis – but during the month of September everyone can do their part to help raise awareness about hunger in our nation.
This September, Feeding America with its network of 202 food banks across the county including the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is encouraging people to participate in Hunger Action Month. The initiative is an effort to mobilize the public to raise awareness and take action in support of domestic hunger relief. A wide range of events include everything from donating your Facebook status with a hunger education message, to participating in the national Wear Orange Day on Sept. 6.
“Hunger Action Month is a perfect time for supporters of the Food Bank to get involved in simple, but meaningful ways,” said Cherie Jamason, Food Bank of Northern Nevada president and CEO. “Whether you are participating by putting a hunger fact on your Facebook page or raising food for the tuna drive, you’re giving a voice and support to those who are hungry.”
The issue is of particular importance in northern Nevada where one in six are at risk of hunger. Nationally, there are almost 49 million who struggle with hunger – including 16 million children.
“It’s a shame that in the ‘land of plenty’ there are people who have to worry about where their next meal will come from,” said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. “They are your neighbors, co-workers and even family members. But everyone can do their part this month to help bring awareness to this issue and help eradicate hunger in our country.”
