Reed senior Kyle Scalise came up just short in the 100-yard breaststroke the last two times he tried to win a championship, at state last year and regionals this year.

He made sure he went out on top when he went down to Las Vegas for the state meet this past weekend. Scalise exacted some revenge, beating Truckee’s Alex Straw in the event by a second. Straw narrowly beat Scalise at the regional meet a week earlier.

Scalise finished the race in 57.51 seconds.

He also took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.67 seconds.

Two local divers also competed at state.

Spanish Springs’ Walter Lee claimed sixth on the boys side, while Reed’s Amy Wantanabe was eighth in the girls competition.
