This photo taken in 1875 features the male members of the Earp family, most notably famed lawman and Old West legend Wyatt Earp. This portrait will be among many items auctioned during Hot August Nights beginning Aug. 17.
Going under the hammer will be a photograph of famed lawman and legend Wyatt Earp, his father Nicholas and brothers Morgan, Virgil, James, Warren and a half brother Newton.
The photo was taken in Dodge City in 1875, during the wedding ceremony of Morgan and Louisa (Lou) Earp. The photo shows Morgan surrounded by his groomsmen and is the only record of the male portion of the Earp clan known to exist.
As with the famous “Billy the Kid” Daguerreotype that sold in 2011 for more than $2 million, this picture of the “First Family” of the Old West should draw keen interest from around the world. The sepia-toned studio shot has been authenticated through forensic testing and will be accompanied by a 21-page report, testifying to its authenticity.
This two-day, nearly 1700 lot auction is expected to draw a crowd of both bidders and spectators, who ordinarily only have the opportunity to see such remarkable, historic items in museums and institutions. The event is free and open to the public and the items will be available for viewing on Aug. 16.
