“I think it’s good to give back to the community,” said volunteer Shina Baxter at the St. Vincent’s Dining Hall on Thursday. It was the second year the Sparks resident and her 8-year-old daughter, Cypress, spent part of their Thanksgiving Day serving dinner to the elderly, homeless, motel residents and anyone else who showed up.

No one was turned away and nobody left hungry said Ray Trevino, dining hall supervisor.

“The Sparks Nugget is very gracious to do this,” said Trevino. Every year, John Ascuaga’s Nugget cooks enough traditional turkey day food for hundreds of people and will do it again on Christmas Day.

After two hours, the flood of diners slowed to a trickle. Volunteer Hank Dever kept a count at the dining room door and said more than 700 people had been served by 82 volunteers. The dining hall serves meals throughout the year.

“If it wasn’t for this, we’d just be sitting at home,” said Zena Milligan who ate with friend Ronnie Davidson. “We didn’t have enough money for turkey.”
