“Man it’s good to be in Quincy, I’ve been coming here for six years and I had never won one and finally I got a win,” Shawn Natenstedt said. “The best part about it I got a win with a repaired 2012 Shaw that I just reclipped last week. That’s the one I put in the wall two weeks ago and to finally come out and get a win with it is awesome.”
Then he gave special thanks to his family, pit crew and sponsors: Silverado Casino, Silver Strike Casino and Competition Carburetion.
It took two attempts to get the IMCA Modified main started and each time Russ Cazier held the point. After the second restart, Natenstedt started to challenge for the lead and took the point two laps later.
There were two more cautions before the halfway point in the 20-lap race, but each time racing resumed, Natenstedt charged away from the field. Behind him Adam Walters and Cazier began a duel for second that lasted for much of the race.
In fact the duel between Walters and Cazier was probably the real race as Natenstedt was leaving everyone and being clocked at 91 mph at the end of the backstretch.
Further back, Chris Nieman slipped toward the back after a spin, while Erica Harmon had moved up to fourth. With six to go, Walters was third while Jeff Olschaka, who was actually several laps down, got past Cazier.
Two more cautions slowed the race and the final one was caused when contact with Olschaka sent Cazier’s car spinning, which lost him a possible second place.
After the finish, Walters thought he was third but was very pleased that he came home second. Not far behind him, Nieman’s charge brought him third place ahead of Matt Murphy.
On that final lap, three cars tangled in Turn 2 and the officials summoned the emergency crew to check on one driver. Since everyone was able to drive back to the pits it appeared all three were uninjured.
At the victory ceremony, after learning he was second, Adam Walters said, “Sweet, my car started going away and it turned into a demolition derby so I just stated beatin’ and bangin’ and worked my up. Russ and I were going back and forth all night. I’d mess up on a start and he’d get me then I’d get him back.
“I’d like to thank Protofab, big thanks to them, Able Machine, D&S Towing, Amsoil and Oil Tech Solutions.”
With over 20 modifieds on hand, and only four transferring to the main from each heat, a B main was necessary to set the 18-car field.
First on point was Bill Pearson, who promptly went into the Turn 1 after his rear brakes failed. Once that was cleaned up, the field took a second only to have another incident bring out the next caution.
As only six would transfer into the main, the group was slowly whittled down to only six after several spins and crashes. At that time, the checkered waved as the final six left standing inherited transfer positions with Chris Nieman taking the victory.
The Modifieds were actually competing for American Valley points as well as the first round of six in the new Quincy — 95A Shootout series.
American Valley Speedway is the home track for the DART Dwarf Car series. And their program consists of two feature races with a full invert in the second event.
While these cars are small, they are very fast and the leaders were clocked about 80 mph at the end of the back straight.
Twenty of these little speedsters took the green and Jason Crosby held the point as the field roared into the first turn. Three laps later he would have a wall banger after tangling with a slower car.
After the next restart was foiled by another caution the field finally began to race in earnest. Eventually Joe Frock grabbed the point while Derek Rossee claimed second and the chase was on.
In the end Frock reached the checkered flag first followed by Rossee, Crosby and Calvin Ryle.
After inverting the field, and waiting for a few other races to be completed the Dwarfs took to the track for their second feature.
This time Jason Crosby led the charge, while the faster cars began to work their way from the back. One of them was Race Wilson, who had problems in the first race.
Three laps into the race Frock, who won the first feature, was up to 6th while Wilson was after the leader. However by lap 8, Frock not only moved forward but used an inside move in Turn 2 to take the point.
Two laps later there was a race-stopping incident when one car got sideways and Race Wilson slammed into him.
The impact knocked Wilson out and as soon as the track officials reached the scene they summoned the emergency crew from the Quincy fire department.
Wilson wasn’t out for long but the emergency crew checked him out just to make sure and an official took him back to his pit. Both cars were towed away, clearing the track.
Once racing resumed, Frock was off and running with Rossee close behind. Lap after lap, they tore around the track, only slightly slowing when it was time to work through a knot of traffic.
In the end, Frock, who is the manager at Wild Waters, took the victory while Rossee again had to settle for the runner-up position.
“In the first race, think I started fourth row outside, got a good line, got out front pretty quick and I’d say it was easy,” Frock said after his second win. “But it was easier than starting 22nd in the second main as you had to be patient as there were guys low, high and you really had to pick your line. However racing with Derrick you can’t be too patient because he’ll take advantage of it.”
Then he thanked Jeff Shurley for building my car, Derrick for helping me with my set up, he’s a good competitor and friend. And he added thanks for Wild Waters where he’s the manager.
Since it was prom night at Quincy High School track promoter Curt Nieman took over his son’s Dwarf Car and raced it in both features. After the races Chase showed up to see how his father, who used to race, faired.
Rounding out the racing card were the Mini Stocks and a few Spec non-winged 360 Sprint cars.
When the Mini Stock feature began Jon Busslen got the jump on Lance Bain and was never headed as he stormed off to the victory.
Only three sprints were able to finish their race and Terry Schank Jr., beat Rowdy McClenon in the feature.
At American Valley the Outlaw Karts have their own track and run a program that ends when the cars begin to hot lap the speedway.
Lacey Richardson won the Box Stock main with Peyton Wichs and Casey Diaz following in second and third.
The Outlaw main ended with a scramble involving several karts. Up front Justin Wichs won followed by Trey Walters and Caleb Gonzalez.
OTHER RACING NEWS
•Memorial Day weekend will be another feats for area racing fans.
One two-day show is at the Lion’s Fernley Motocross Track as the local chapter of the Over the Hill Gang hosts its traditional round of their National series. It’s two days of hard fought motocross racing in the Sandbox.
Oval track fans also have some choices to make.
On Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m. Lovelock Speedway will host another of its regular points races. Closer to home, 95A Speedway in Fernley will also host another of its regular programs featuring all classes and Outlaw Karts.
North of Reno, at Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, Calif., that track hosts two days of racing. Start times are 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
•Nevada quartet were busy this weekend both in Charlotte, North Carolina and Iowa.
Brendan Gaughan ended up 12th in Friday night’s Camping World Truck Race. Then on Sunday he was in Iowa for a Nationwide event where he used a steady drive to finish 10th.
In that same Iowa race Kurt Busch lost a possible third place finish when he had a last lap wall banger but was able to take fifth. T.J. Bell on the other hand had electrical problems that kept him in 27th place at the finish.
Back in Charlotte, at Saturday’s All Star race, Kyle Busch started on the pole but ended up fourth. Older brother Kurt came from 17th to eighth at the finish.
