RENO — Brüka Theatre presents “In The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play),” opening this weekend.

This comedy about marriage, intimacy and electricity is written by award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl and directed by Karen Chandler. Nominated for three Tony awards, the play is set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat “hysterical” women (and some men). Ruhl centers her play on “how we separate our bodily functions and labor and love,” examining the nature of marriage and what it truly means to love someone. “In The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play),” premiered at Berkeley Rep in 2009. No one under the age of 17 recommended.

The play opens Friday, followed by a post-show opening night champagne reception. “In The Next Room (or the vibrator play)” shows for 13 total performances: Jan. 27 and 28. Feb. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17 and 18. The Feb. 15 performance is a special Wednesday show and there is a Sunday matinee on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. followed by a talk-back with the company. The doors open a half an hour before curtain time.
